Exhibit: Lyn Carter Earns Her Stripes!

Textile Museum of Canada's Lyn Carter: 11th Line & Home Economics Exhibitions Review

I haven't been to The Textile Museum of Canada in a while, so I was glad I took the time out of my busy pre-vacation schedule to go visit Lyn Carter: 11th Line. This unique exhibition is part of  the Toronto Offsite Design Festival that took place last weekend, as was Come Up To My Room, which ended on Sunday.

The exhibition title 11th Line comes from the name of her rural Ontario address where she lives and works, which is explored in her pieces.

With 11th Line, "Carter explores one of the most fundamental textile design elements – the stripe". Rural landscapes and structures like barns and silos, seem to materialize in her textile pieces, and it felt like I was being pulled into them. Interestingly paired with Carter's work were historical artifacts from the Textile Museum's permanent collection, which added more perspective to not only Carter's pieces, but the rural theme as well.

One of the highlights for me was a video collaboration between Carter and Icelandic artist Sigrun Hardardottir. When visiting this exhibit, make sure you approach the video up close - it feels like you are on a speeding plane looking down at the land below.

Even though the focus of my visit was the Lyn Carter exhibit, I also took the time to see Home Economics: 150 Years of Canadian Hooked Rugs. I enjoyed seeing some of the rugs, which brought back fond memories of my grandmother and mother hooking rugs. I couldn't believe how much some of the rugs resembled paintings from afar.
