Explore Toronto: Visiting Toronto's Past Surrounded by it's Future!

Historic Fort York Review

Several weeks ago I visited Historic Fort York, mainly to see the amazing Gertrude Kearn's Exhibit. While there I decided to tour the Fort's grounds and buildings, something I haven't done since a childhood school trip. And once I entered the grounds, I felt like I was transported back in time.

I'm sure plenty of us who grew up in Toronto or the GTA, had the opportunity to visit Fort York on a school trip, but I highly recommend revisiting it as an adult. I learned more and understood the significance of such an important time in Canadian history, which passed over my adorable 10 years-old head many years ago.

Historic Fort York is Canada's largest collection of original 1812 buildings and 1813 battle site. Visitors can wander throughout the grounds and in buildings, reading placards throughout and looking at memorabilia. Homage is paid to both sides of the war, both civilian and military. During the peak summer months, there are actors dressed in historic garb, going about their everyday life in 1812. While I was there, I got to visit the kitchen and taste some freshly baked delicious cookies. The Fort York Guard also performs a variety of demonstrations during the summer months.

Fort York also plays home to many Toronto events and festivals like Nuit Blanche, Field Trip, Taste of Toronto and this weekend's TURF . It also hosts many exhibits throughout the year like Magna Carta which will open October 4 and runs until November 7, 2015.

Historic Fort York is a great place to visit and learn about Canada's and Toronto's past for people of all ages and backgrounds! It is so cool to visit the past surrounded by modern day condos and the CN Tower. Please visit Fort York for more information.

P.s!: After your visit, make sure you take the five minute walk south to the corner of Fleet and Bathurst streets to see Douglas Coupland's beautiful Monument to the War of 1812 (2008) art installation which pays tribute to the triumphant British Soldiers and the fallen Americans.

P.s,
Melanie!
