Explore Toronto: Coupland and The City!

Several Toronto Public Art Installations by Douglas Coupland Review

Now that is had been a few months since the ending of the Douglas Coupland invasion of Toronto with two major exhibitions at MOCCA and the ROM, you might be going through Coupland withdrawal. Don't fret, I've got you covered!

There are so many amazing pubic art installations in Toronto, especially downtown. A while back I had the opportunity to join a walking art tour organized by MOCCA, and tour a small part of Toronto and learn about some of Douglas Coupland's amazing art displayed for all to see!

I started my tour at the bottom of Bathurst Street where two large statues of toy soldiers stand. Called Monument to The War of 1812 (2008), this piece pays tribute to the triumphant British soldiers and the fallen Americans. My next Coupland stop was Canoe Landing Park which is full of Douglas Coupland Artwork. Please visit my Canoe Landing Park review post to read about my visit. My next Coupland stop was a stunning glass wall/mural that I have walked by many times called Superior (2014). It is located on the Southcore Financial Centre at 120 Bremner Boulevard. This beautiful mural was inspired by the painting North Shore, Superior (1926) by Group of Seven member Lawren Harris. This artwork reminded me of the first section of Coupland's MOCCA exhibition.

Next of the Coupland tour was a short walk north to Citibank Place at 123 Front Street. There are two very unique 3D artworks hanging in the lobby that can also be seen from the street. Crystal Mist Fantasy (2013) and Crystal Jack Pine (2013) play homage to the style of Group of Seven Members Tom Thomson and JEH MacDonald. My final Coupland stop was the RBC Tower located at 155 Wellington Street. Within the towers lobby one of Coupland's Letter Panel series hangs called History of the Fur Trade (2009). Security for the RBC Tower is pretty tight and sometimes will not allow people to come in to view the artwork. But if you ask politely, they might allow you to take a quick look but no pictures. I love exploring Toronto; there are so many amazing public art installations that I walk by and never notice. I'm learning to stop and look around this amazing city and take in all the wonders it has to offer..... many for free!
