Harbourfront Centre Deep Woods & REWILD Exhibition Reviews

Several weeks ago the weather was way too cold to go for a walk and I was too restless to stay home in my warm apartment. I decided to take a trip down to the Harbourfront Centre and visit the many art exhibits on display collectively called Deep Woods: Visual Arts Exhibitions Winter/Spring 2015.

Deep Woods consists of seven different small exhibits exploring the theme of the Canadian natural landscape and the woods. All the exhibits circled around the inside perimeter of the building so it was easy to go from one exhibit to the other.

I only got the opportunity to visit five exhibits. One, Texting Syria, was an interactive installation which was running only for one night a few weeks ago. Fortunately, I got to see the amazing installation during last years' Nuit Blanche. The other exhibit I didn't see was Through the Trees, which is only available to Fleck Dance Theatre ticket-holders. But the other five exhibits make up for the missing two. The first two exhibits I saw was a fabulous photography exhibit called Deep Woods and a fun multidisciplinary art exhibit called Stopping By Woods. I had to spend some time observing some of the small installations in Stopping By Woods, as they moved and changed. Kids both young and old will love this exhibit.

The next two exhibits was a funny thing, which was a small but interesting exhibition of forest-themed photographs and Lasting Effect, another multidisciplinary exhibit displaying art pieces that have been re-purposed to become what they are now.

Every So Often was the final exhibit and mainly features animal sculptures created from various materials. This exhibit is down the hallway of the artisans workshops and kilns. It's interesting to view work that could've quite possibly come from a workshop that's similar to the one across from the display cases.

Even though some of the pieces were not very exciting, on a whole Deep Woods was well worth the trip through the construction to the Harbourfront Centre. There was so much to see and explore, that there will be something that everyone will enjoy. I especially liked getting a chance to explore the building and getting a closer look at the art studios. Deep Woods: Visual Arts Exhibitions Winter/Spring is running until June 14, 2015. And don't forget to visit the MIA, which is a short five minute walk east of Harbourfront Centre.
