Exhibit: Function & Fashion at the ROM!

Royal Ontario Museum's Fashion Follows Form Exhibition Review

The fashion world is often designed for tall, slender people who can strut down any runway or street. But after I finally got the chance to visit the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) and see the much talked abut Fashion Follows Form: Designs for Sitting exhibit, my perspective of clothing has changed.

Fashion Follow Form showcases designs created by Toronto-based designer Izzy Camilleri and her collection IZ Adaptive. IZ Adaptive is an innovative fashion line that merges functionality and design, created exclusively for men and women who use wheelchairs.

Izzy Camilleri is well known in the fashion world. Her career spans 30 years and includes clients all over the globe. She has been creating clothes both for the runway and the silver screen (Camilleri created the fur coat for Meryl Streep's character in the film The Devil Wears Prada). She also was named Women's Wear Designer of The Year in 2006 by the Canadian Arts and Fashion Awards (CAFA). She began IZ Adaptive in 2004, when she was approached about design a cape for journalist Barbara Turnball, who has been in a wheelchair since she was shot during a robbery.

Displayed among the IZ Adaptive designs are 18th-19th century fashions, that were also created for sitting positions and several of Camilleri's couture designs.

Fashion Follows Form: Designs for Sitting is a thought provoking exhibit that proves that fashion is not only just about the clothes, but can affect people both mentally and physically. I highly recommend a visit to the ROM to see this exhibit before it ends January 25, 2015. I also recommend visiting the Design Exchange's Politics of Fashion/Politics of Fashion for more thought provoking fashions.

P.s!: General admission is only $10 on Friday nights at the ROM. Fashion Follows Form is included with a general admission ticket!
 P.s,
Melanie!
