Exhibit: The Bata Shoe Museum Shows That Sneakers Are Good For The Sole!

Heya! Last week I decided to visit one of my favourite Toronto Museums: The Bata Shoe Museum. I haven't been in a while, but one of their latest exhibitions Out Of The Box: The Rise of Sneaker Culture, caught my attention. What I first noticed about this exhibit, was how different it looked from The Bata Shoe Museum's other exhibits. It is modern, sleek, and vibrant. Like most of the shoes on display.

Out of The Box is North America's first exhibition to explore the history of sneaker culture. With over 120 pairs of sneakers on display, even people who only own 1 pair of sneakers (like me) will enjoy this interesting and cool exhibit. Along the walls, the exhibit outlines the evolution of the sneaker, from its beginnings during the mid 19th century when they were called plimsoles, to the modern day sneaker. Through out the history lessons given by placards on the wall, examples include rare sneakers from the archives of Nike, Adidas, Converse, and Northampton Museum and Art, which display the design and technological progression of sneakers, into what we see (and wear) today.

In the middle of the exhibit, rare and limited edition sneakers are showcased and include loans from Christian Louboutin, Run DMC, Bobbita Garcia, Prada and Lavin. A short documentary film examines the recent history and the influence of celebrities on sneaker culture, which is worth the time to watch.

I fully enjoyed this exhibit. I not only enjoyed learning all about the history of sneaker culture, but I loved looking at all the sleek and cool sneakers on display. The exhibit makes me want to buy a pair of sneakers instead of stilettos, next time I'm shoe shopping. Out of The Box: The Rise Of Sneaker Culture runs until June 1, 2014.
